Obverse

The obverse side of the silver coins features the national shield or coat of arms of Mexico in the center. The coat of arms depicts a Mexican (golden) eagle perched on a cactus at the top of a lake as it feasts upon a serpent. As per the folklore of Aztec people, the new country will be formed when an eagle is seen eating a snake on the top of a lake, thus marking the establishment of Mexico. The shield is surrounded by the previous ten versions of the same with the imprint: “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS”.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2023 Silver 1 oz Mexican Libertad Coin showcases two of the most significant symbols of Mexico: the Winged Victory statue and the volcanoes. The Winged Victory statue, also referred to as the Angel of Independence, was established to honor the triumph of victory over Spain in the War of Independence. In the background are the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes, which were told to be two star-crossed lovers turned into mountains by God so they could finally be together. Inscriptions on the reverse include, “1 ONZA PLATA PURA 2023 LEY .999.”

The MS63 grade by NGC

The Mexican Mint (mint mark—OM), established in 1535, is the oldest mint in the Americas and is prominently known for minting the country's legal tender coins and the orders of the Bank of Mexico. The Mexican Silver Libertad coins were introduced in 1982 and have been produced annually since then. Such as the featured 2023 Silver 1 oz Mexican Libertad Coin, the Mexican Libertad coins do not carry a face value but are legal tenders and are accepted as currency.
