The obverse side of the coin is inscribed with Mexico’s coat of arms in the center, surrounded by the ten historical versions of the seal. The coat of arms of Mexico depicts a Mexican (golden) eagle devouring a rattlesnake while standing on a cactus plant, seemingly in water. The symbolism of the arms reverts to the Aztec legend that describes the building of a city. This legend states that the city will be built when the Aztec people see an eagle eating a snake on the top of a lake.

The reverse side is yet another display of symbolism of freedom and independence that features the Angel of Independence or El Monumento a la Independencia, also known as the Statue of Winged Victory, displaying Mexico’s victory over Spain in the War for Independence. The coin overall displays the virtues of independence, freedom, and new beginnings.
