Product Description

In 1981, the Mexican Mint revived a design concept first used on Mexican coinage 60 years earlier. In 1921, the mint celebrated the centennial of Mexican independence from Spain with the release of a 50 Peso gold coin. Known as the Centenario, this coin featured an impressive design of Winged Victory on the reverse and the national coat of arms on the reverse. The release of the first Mexican Gold Libertads in 1981 exactly replicated the visuals of the historic Centenario. That first release in 1981 featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz versions of the coin. In its debut year, the 1/2 oz Gold Libertad sold 193,000 units, a record for this weight that still stands today.

The obverse of the 2022 1/2 oz Gold Libertad features a depiction of the Mexican coat of arms. This side of the coin comes with an image of the Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus as it uses its beak and talons to battle with a serpent. There is an oak-and-laurel wreath below the bird and the nation of issue marked above. On the reverse side of 2022 Mexican Gold Libertads, you will find the modern vision of Winged Victory. Though the original Libertads featured the 1921 depiction of Winged Victory with a close-up image of Victory in front-facing relief, the new image offers a removed perspective with a three-quarter-profile relief of the towering statue of Victory.
